Deducing from the variational principle, longitudinal component of electromagnetic waveguide is e- liminated and the transverse electric and magnetic components are treated as dual vectors to each other. Then the Maxwell equations for electromagnetic waveguide are derived to Hamilton system formulation and symplectic geomet- ric form. The finite element method is used to discretize the cross section of the waveguide structure, and a set of linear algebraic equations are obtained for calculating the cutoff frequency and propagation constant of electromag- netic wave in waveguide. Examples demonstrate the accuracy of the proposed method. This paper also provides a new approach to analyze and calculate the problem of electromagnetic waveguide.

Based on the dynamical equations and the initial conditions, the oscillation of a simple pendulum with large amplitude is analyzed approximately. A method is introduced to estimate the period of a simple pendulum with an extremely large amplitude whose value is approaching π. The results show that the deviation between the ex- act value and estimated value of the period increases with the decrease of the oscillation amplitude. The linear ap- proximation leads to the increment of the errors.

The experiment of measuring sound velocity in university plays the important role in comprehending the knowledge of wave superposition and standing wave. However, the sub-maximum phenomenon existing in the resonance interference method usually results in mistakes during experiment. This paper discusses quantitatively this phenomenon.Based on the numerical simulation of Matlab software, Fourier spectrum analysis of the information pro- duced by signal generator, and compared with the experiment data, the conclusion is that the sub-maximum phe- nomenon is not related with the sub-frequency signal.

In the liquid specific heat capacity measurement experiment using the electric heating method, the Newton's law of cooling is usually used to correct the system heat dissipation problem.Through calculation and analysis of the system heat dissipation,a new measurement scheme is put forward to reduce the effects of the system heat dissi- pation on the test results. The system heat dissipation ratio of two different heating processes is used to measure the liquid specific heat capacity in the new method.Test results show that the measurement scheme has strong operability and high precision, which is suitable for popularization and promotion in the university physics experiment teaching.

Max Born was one of the greatest physicists in the 20th century. He had strong sense of social respon- sibility and progressive political inclinations. To review the process by which he contacted with Marxism, and to an- alyze the cause which formed and changed his attitude to Marxists and the socialist system could help us to deepen the understanding and to give the scientific evaluation of the political ideas of west natural scientists.
