From tacit to explicit: a study on the teaching transition in mechanics #br# based on Hestenes modeling theory#br#

Abstract: A significant gap exists in the transition from high school to university physics teaching, the essence of which is a “cognitive advancement” challenge for students as their modeling thinking shifts from tacit and guided to explicit and autonomous. Framed by Hestenes Modeling Theory, this study analyzes the higher demands of university physics on cognitive abilities, particularly concerning mathematical tools, model construction, and deductive validation. By introducing cutting-edge physics examples such as the “electromagnetic sled,” the paper demonstrates how to guide students in recognizing the necessity of advanced tools like calculus. It aims to provide substantive strategies for the teaching transition, facilitating a smooth transition in students scientific thinking and enhancing their modeling abilities.
