Abstract: A brief introduction of the scientific career and work of Prof. de Gennes, the Nobel prize of physics laureate in 1991, is given. Dr. de Gennes is the founder of the new discipline soft matter physics. The content, present state and meaning of the soft matter physics are given as well.
