Abstract: Abstarct: "Flying chimney" means that a light paper tube can take off when it is lit at the up part. The kinetic parameters are firstly determined according to the air thermodynamic principles and the preliminary experiment. Meanwhile, a theoretical model is established based on Newton' s law of internal friction and the differential equation of fluid flow characteristic parameters. Furthermore, the main dynamic parameter "frontal resistance" is quantitatively investigated by the experiment and its effect on the tube rising is discussed. In addition, a new method is developed for calculating "frontal resistance". The experiment of "flying chimney" is simple, which can not only be used as a design experiment on college physics teaching but also can thus explain the thermodynamic phenomena in daily life.
