Abstract: Photon detectors with single-photon sensitivity and photon number resolving capability have important applications in weak-light detection fields such as quantum communication, lidar, fluorescence measurement, nuclear radiation detection, astronomical detection, and biomedicine. The traditional single-photon counting experimental instrument only has the photon counting capability and does not have the photon number resolving capability. This paper presents a room-temperature photon counting and photon number resolving experimental setup based on a multi-pixel photon counter detection module. This setup can demonstrate photon counting and photon number resolving experiments for short-pulsed light, intuitively demonstrate the particle nature of light, and replace the traditional single-photon counting experimental instrument.
