Abstract: The Am-Be neutron source is one of the commonly used neutron sources in laboratory settings. In this experiment, a simple Am-Be neutron source was prepared using an 241Am radioactive source and a BeO ceramic plate, with a polyethylene tube serving as the moderator. Neutrons and γ-rays produced were measured using a 3He proportional counter and a LaBr3:Ce detector, respectively. By calculating the neutron yield and the neutron-to-γ-ray count ratio, the feasibility of this preparation method was verified. The experimental setup is simple and operationally safe, helping students gain an in-depth understanding of neutron physical properties and related detection techniques. It provides a practical foundation for nuclear physics experimental teaching.
