The imaging properties of single spherical surface made of negative refractive index (n'〈 0) materials (NRIM) under the paraxial approximation are investigated. Theoretical derivations confirmed that the paraxial imaging at single spherical surface made of NRIM and conventional materials have the same expressions. However, the analyzed results, due to the refractive index n'〈 O, indicate that the imaging characteristic of NRIM is completely different from that of conventional materials. It is easy to discuss the imaging properties, such as the location of object and image, the erected and the inverted, virtual and real properties of image, and the scaling rule, through the s'-s curves. The comparison of s'-s curves between different materials are given, also the graphs of the relationship between object and image in the whole space of n'〈0,f'〉0,f〉0 as well.

Research on Tm^3+-doped lasers has attracted many interests since the Tm^3+ ions have plenty energy levels. The author noticed that the literature is largely confused concerning the designation of energy levels for Tm^3+ ions. The reason for this confusion is presented firstly by illustrating some examples, and then the spectral terms of equivalent electrons'system in L -S coupling are calculated for Tm^3+ ions. At last, a suggestion is given that consistency of atomic states for Tm^3+ ions should be hold.
